Devotion

Romans 8 opens with one of the clearest declarations of the gospel: there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. Condemnation says that our failures are the final word and that we must remain under a sentence we cannot escape. The cross of Christ says otherwise. Jesus bore the penalty of sin so that those who trust Him can be forgiven and made new.

This promise does not mean God ignores sin or that conviction is unnecessary. Conviction is the loving work of the Spirit that shows us where we need to repent and return. Condemnation drives us away in shame and says there is no hope. Conviction draws us toward the Father and says grace is available through Christ.

Many believers continue to punish themselves for sins God has already forgiven. They replay the past, avoid prayer, or assume that growth is impossible. Romans 8:1 invites us to stand in the finished work of Christ. We can confess honestly, receive forgiveness, and walk by the Spirit instead of living under the accusation of yesterday.
