Devotion

Christ has made His people free, and Paul urges believers to stand firm in that freedom. This freedom is not permission to do whatever we want. It is freedom from the bondage of trying to earn God’s approval, from the rule of sin, and from religious burdens that replace grace with performance.

Bondage can return in subtle forms. We may begin to believe that God loves us only when we have had a good week, that our identity rests on people’s approval, or that a familiar sin has more power than Christ. Paul calls us to remember the liberty we have received through the gospel.

Standing fast requires vigilance. We return to the truth of grace, refuse lies that pull us back into fear, and choose the practices that keep us near to Christ. Freedom grows as we learn to live under the leadership of the Spirit rather than under the chains of guilt, pride, or habit. Jesus did not set us free so that we could live enslaved again.
