Devotion

Zephaniah gives a tender picture of the Lord in the midst of His people. He is mighty to save, yet He also rejoices over them with joy and rests in His love. Strength and tenderness are not opposites in God. His power protects and rescues; His love receives and delights in His children.

Many people find it easier to believe that God tolerates them than to believe that He truly loves them. We remember our failures, our unfinished growth, and the ways we fall short. This verse calls us to see the heart of a Savior who does not love reluctantly. He rejoices over His people because His love is rooted in His own faithful character.

Receiving God’s love does not make us careless about sin. It gives us a secure place from which to repent, grow, and serve. We do not have to perform for a distant God. We can come to the mighty One who is near, who saves, and who holds His people with joyful love.
