Devotion

The people rebuilding the temple could see that it did not look as impressive as the former structure. Some remembered what had been lost and felt discouraged by the comparison. God spoke hope into that disappointment. The future glory would not be measured only by what their eyes could see at the beginning.

Comparison can rob us of courage in many areas of life. We compare a new beginning to an earlier season, a small step to a finished result, or our present resources to someone else’s. Haggai reminds us that God is able to bring peace and purpose to what seems modest or incomplete. He is not limited by the size of the starting point.

This verse does not promise that every later season will look exactly like the past. It offers something better: God can write a future that carries His glory in a new way. When we keep obeying in the work before us, He can build more than we can currently imagine. Do not despise the faithful beginning simply because it appears smaller than what came before.
