Today’s Encouragement

Love in Scripture is active, patient, and costly. It is more than a warm feeling toward people who are easy to enjoy. God’s love teaches us to value others, speak with care, serve without needing applause, and choose what is good for another person.

A loving life is often proven in small moments: listening fully, answering gently, forgiving quickly, helping quietly, and seeing people as souls made in the image of God. Love becomes a daily witness when it shapes both our attitude and our actions.

Mark 12:31 teaches that love for others is inseparable from genuine love for God.

Jesus says, “And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.” He is giving the second great commandment, right after the command to love God with all the heart, soul, mind, and strength. This shows that love for God should overflow into the way we treat people.

The phrase “love thy neighbour as thyself” means we are to care for others with sincerity, kindness, compassion, and fairness. It does not mean loving others only when they are easy to love. It means treating people with the same concern, patience, and dignity that we naturally want for ourselves.

To love your neighbor is to be mindful of their needs, to show mercy, to speak truth with grace, to help when you can, and to refuse bitterness, cruelty, selfishness, or indifference. It is love that becomes visible in both attitude and action.

Then Jesus says, “There is none other commandment greater than these.” He is referring to both loving God and loving others. These are the highest commands because they summarize the heart of godly living. When a person truly loves God, that love will shape how they treat others.

This scripture reminds us that faith is not just about words, beliefs, or outward religion. It is also about how we live toward people. Real obedience to God includes a loving heart that reaches outward.

Mark 12:31 calls us to a life of active love — a love that is unselfish, thoughtful, and rooted in the love of God.
